After 4 ½ years as Education Director at Piccolo Theatre, Inc., Tony Lawry has resigned from the organization to spend more time with his family and continue teaching tomorrow’s comedy stars elsewhere. He will finish out his term teaching Mid-Winter Improv, ending on March 5. We here at PTI are so happy for him and wish him and his family many blessings for the future!
Tony single-handedly built the Piccolo Comedy Arts Camps & Classes youth programming for kids ages 10-15 at a time when PTI was tiptoeing into a new chapter of its history. His desire to teach, his drive to succeed, and his commitment to better reach the otherwise underserved demographic of tween students made PTCAC a trusted avenue for learning through laughter. Regarded accomplishments over the years include Girl Power Sketch Comedy, giving young female actors, writers, and thinkers the opportunity to collaborate and create with a unique comedic voice with direction from Chicago-area’s best teaching artists; Comedy Arts Summer Camp I and II, allowing kids from Chicagoland to gain confidence from new experiences, strengthen communication skills, and be active for 4 weeks in diverse classes based in the comedy arts; and regularly connecting students with other artists, comedy superstars, and youth organizations broadening their awareness of opportunities outside of the classroom.
Tony is the heart of PTIs youth programming, and without his leadership and sense of play, we cannot best serve the Evanston tween community with further camps and classes. It is our hope that other organizations benefit from Tony’s incredible example and talents, and we will continue to produce comedy theatre for all ages in the years to come.
Though PTI will not be the same without Tony there, we look forward to seeing his future work as a teacher and director. Congratulations, Tony, and thank you – so dearly – for the fine work you have done!
